Preparing for your Photo session
Getting ready for a family photo session can be as exciting as it is stressful, especially when you're aiming to capture those perfect moments that will hang on your walls for years to come. Whether it’s your first time booking a professional session or you’re a seasoned pro, these tips will help ensure that your family is prepared, relaxed, and photo-ready!
1. Choosing the Right Outfits
Selecting what to wear can significantly influence the look and feel of your photos. Here are a few guidelines to help you choose the best outfits for your family photo session:
- Coordinate Colors: Pick outfits that complement each other without matching exactly. Soft, neutral tones like beige, pastel, or earthy colors often work well together and suit New Hampshire’s natural landscapes. Avoid clothing with busy patterns. Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns.
- Comfort is Key: Make sure everyone is comfortable in their outfits; discomfort can show up in your photos. Avoid overly tight or itchy fabrics and opt for clothing that allows you to move freely. For this reason I LOVE flowy dresses!
- Layer for the Season: New England weather can be unpredictable. Layers not only add visual interest but also allow flexibility for changing temperatures.
2. Preparing the Kids
Kids will be kids, and sometimes, they might not be as cooperative as you’d hope - and that is okay! Here’s how to help them enjoy the session:
Explain the Process: Talk to them about what to expect and involve them in the preparation process. Let them choose a piece of clothing or a prop to bring.
Pack Essentials: Bring along snacks, drinks, and a favorite toy or book to help keep them settled and happy. Bring snacks that aren't messy, such a smarties or fruit snacks.
Schedule Smartly: Plan the session at a time when your children are usually at their best, avoiding nap times.
3. Including Pets
If your furry family members are joining (I love when pets join, but some locations don't allow them, check with me before to make sure), a little preparation can make a big difference:
Bring Their Favorites: Have their favorite treats and toys on hand to grab their attention during the shoot.
A Quick Exercise Beforehand: Give them a little exercise before the session to burn off excess energy.
Pack a Pet Kit: Include water, a bowl, a leash, and any grooming tools to spruce up their appearance, if needed.
4. location and timing
Think about the location and time of day for your photos. Early morning or late afternoon/evenings (this is called golden hour which is the hour before or after sunset) offers soft, flattering light. There are so many beautiful and unique locations between Boston and the NH Seacoast, if you need location recommendations please don't hesitate to reach out!
5. Relax and Have Fun
Perhaps the most important tip of all is to relax and enjoy the moment. Genuine smiles and laughter make for the best photographs. It's okay if not everyone is fully cooperative, I am very experienced (my own kids have taught me well) in this area and will work with your family to get beautiful, authentic shots no matter what!
